Any advice on making the leap from Assistant to Editor?

Ask the editors on your show, if you can stay after hours, and cut some scenes for them. Then politely ask for critique (and listen) the next day. This will get you both cutting experience, and critique, making you a better editor.
My first 'editor' credit, came from doing this so much on one episode, that i ended up one of the editors on that show cuz i had cut so much of the show.

PS: also, do not be offended if/when they completely change up the scene you spent your extra hours cutting, of course your work won't be perfect at first so just expect it. Just take it as a learning experience.
