Thoughts and Tips on the P2 Camera 2008/12/22 13:40
I recently asked a friend that owns a P2 Camera, if he likes it and here was his response. I thought it beneficial to pass along the info...

The quality is excellent and loading it into the computer (FCP) is usually fairy easy. The additional things you need to know are:

You need to have enough cards in the field to hold the footage you plan to record. Make sure you have 2 extra cards to download into your computer. I usually import them directly into FCP, which makes quicktimes of them for you. I also make sure I back up EVERYTHING that I record onto another drive so you have a failsafe. Remember, this isn't on tape so if one of the 1s or Os gets messed up, it could take an entire clip down with it. That said, it has never happened to me.

If you are going to record ONLY what the cards will hold, then you won't need to do anything extra in the field. If you are planning to go beyond the capacity, you'll need something to help you import it onto another computer and drive. I suggest having someone who has done it there, perhaps an assistant or someone that knows a little about what they are doing. Under the gun on the set isn't the place to learn.

You can also download them directly from the camera into FCP. Just remember that it can take a little time (sometimes about 2x the speed of the footage or 15 mins transfer for every 30 of footage)... but again, this depends on the drive, connection, etc.

The bottom line is I love it. I know that Panasonic is coming out with a larger P2 card this next month (they do it every year around this time).

I've edited and produced projects with the P2 and (except for some older Avids) have never had a problem with it. Just make sure that if you are using AVID that it is compatible. Older Avids don't accept it.

You can look at the clips as quicktimes and make a paper cut if that helps. You can also watch them on the camera, but I don't think that would reflect the name of the clip, so I'd suggest having ittransferred through the FCP, then copying the quicktimes for your reference (and also if you are having it transcribed).
